The hits just keep on coming for Urban Meyer and his 2018 Ohio State recruiting class.

When Tyreke Johnson committed to the 2018 Ohio State recruiting class it was certainly a huge get for head coach Urban Meyer. It made his No. 1 class just that much stronger.

Johnson is a four star safety who is expected to make the switch to corner in college according to an article by Andrew Lind of ElevenWarriors. He is the ranked as the 5th best safety and the No. 41 player in the country according to 247Sports

Johnson is the 19th player in the 2018 Ohio State recruiting class and the 18th ranked as either a four or five star recruit. He is also the 5th defensive back in the class joining  Jaiden Woodbey, Josh Proctor, Sevyn Banks and Marcus Hooker.

Urban Meyer has once again loaded his recruiting class with defensive players, 11  of 19 so far this year. That has become a necessity with so many players on that side of the ball leaving early for the NFL.

Here is a list of the defensive players in the 2018 class and their position rankings per 247Sports:

  • Taron Vincent  DT  (1)  6-2, 285
  • Brenton Cox  SDE  (2)  6-4.5, 247
  • Jaiden Woodbey  S  (2)  6-2, 204
  • Teradja Mitchell  ILB  (2)  6-2, 232
  • Tyreke Johnson  S  (5)  6-1, 191
  • Josh Proctor  S  (8)  6-2, 190
  • Dallas Gant  OLB  (9)  6-3, 225
  • K’Vaughan Pope  ILB  (8)  6-2, 210
  • Antwuan Jackson Jr.  DT  (2)  6-2.5, 305
  • Sevyn Banks  CB  (26)  6-1, 180
  • Marcus Hooker  CB  (54)  6-0, 185

Marcus Hooker is the only guy who is not a four star recruit and a top 300 player. But remember his brother Malik? He was pretty good wasn’t he?

Ohio State continues to lead the recruiting rankings with a score of 305.06 over the 2nd place Texas Longhorns whose total now stands at 279.37.

This could be the year Urban Meyer’s Ohio State recruiting class finishes at the top. However, Alabama is sitting at No. 10 at the moment with only 14 commits so far. This is typical Nick Saban, he sits back and then fills out his class with the four and five star players he wants before signing day.

Urban won’t know exactly how many scholarships will be available in the 2018 class until the season is over when he knows who will declare for the draft or transfer. If it’s less than 25 the Buckeyes could fall from the top spot.

But whatever the final tally is, Ohio State will have an outstanding recruiting class once again. In fact, if the Buckeyes’ average score of 95.35 holds up it will break their record-setting total of 94.59 they set last year.
