Ohio State Resume Not Strong Enough for CFP Committee

The Ohio State loss to Iowa was too much to overcome in the minds of the College Football Playoff Committee.

If we are honest, no one should be shocked that Ohio State wasn’t selected.  It hurts and is disappointing, but this team was inconsistent most of the season.

What is unfair is the system we are forced to live with.

No other sport relies on perception or an eye test to determine who makes the playoff.  No other sport denies a conference champion the opportunity to play for a national championship.

Having four spots when there are five Power Five champions is absurd.

How can we as a college football community say with a straight face that the four-team playoff system is legitimate when a conference champion gets shafted annually?

This year it was two champions.

More from Scarlet and Game

I know there are football people who are adamant that Alabama is better and the Committee obviously agrees, but the truth is we don’t know if Alabama, Ohio State or USC is better.

I’ve seen all three teams look dominant and all three look vulnerable.

I hated the BCS because it was arbitrary. The playoff is better, but we are still relying on a set of people to pick who gets to play for a title.

It is time to look at expanding to eight teams.  Not because the Buckeyes were left out, but to make the system legitimate by removing most of the subjective nature of the process.

It is not a complicated fix.  Take the winners of each Power Five conference and three at-large teams.

The Committee can still select the at-large teams and rankings.

Next: We debate whether 4 or 8 team playoff is the correct number

No doubt the No. 9 and No. 10 teams will gripe, but swallowing that process will be much easier than what we have now.
