Ohio State and Penn State fall, Wisconsin only conference team in top 10.

It was a mixed bag for the Big Ten on Saturday. Both Ohio State and Penn State lost and were dropped from the top 10 in the AP Poll. But now the Big Ten has six ranked teams, more than any other conference.

Wisconsin is ranked No. 7 and is the lone top 10 Big Ten team. Ohio State dropped to 11 and Penn State is at 17. Michigan State sits at 14, Michigan 22 and the Iowa Hawkeyes moved into the poll at 25 after their dominating win over the Buckeyes.

The SEC has three top 10 teams, and this may surprise some of you but I don’t have a problem with that. Alabama and Georgia should be ranked in the top 2 regardless of the order you want to put them in. The Auburn Tigers are ranked No. 10 and their two losses were narrow ones on the road to Clemson and LSU. A couple of difficult places to play.

The Power 5 Conference breakdown this week is as follows. The Big 12 has the second most teams in the AP Top 25 with five, the SEC has four while the Pac 12 and ACC have three apiece. Here are the rankings in this week’s AP Poll:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Clemson
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Wisconsin
  7. Miami
  8. TCU
  9. Washington
  10. Auburn
  11. Ohio State
  12. Oklahoma State
  13. Michigan State
  14. Central Florida
  15. USC
  16. Penn State
  17. Virginia Tech
  18. Mississippi State
  19. Washington State
  20. Memphis
  21. Michigan
  22. South Florida
  23. West Virginia
  24. Iowa State
  25. Iowa

More from Scarlet and Game

It is interesting that Wisconsin and Miami are undefeated but are ranked at 6 and 7 respectively in this weeks poll. One loss teams Notre Dame, Clemson and Oklahoma are ranked ahead of them.

I know the CFP rankings will probably have the Badgers and Hurricanes down somewhat as well, but the committee members have different criteria to take into consideration when making their rankings.

Neither Wisconsin or Miami may prove to be top 4 caliber teams by the end of the season, but it is quite an accomplishment to be undefeated this late in the season.

The CFP rankings will be out tomorrow and it will be interesting to see if the same teams are ranked at the top as the ones in the AP Poll.
