Ohio State Football: Sound of silence, I’m not hearing ‘We Are’

The Ohio State victory on Saturday quieted things down.

It’s amazing how silent a fanbase can become after just one game. Since Ohio State defeated Penn State on Saturday, I haven’t heard, or read, “We Are” one time. I wonder why.

I have heard that phrase many times since the Buckeyes were defeated in Happy Valley last year. Even more so after I wrote an article at the end of the regular season in which I stated Ohio State should be included in the College Football Playoff instead of the Big Ten champion.

Since that time, when I shared articles concerning Ohio State football on Facebook group discussion pages, I would often get some kind of crude comment followed by “We Are”. It wasn’t exactly a secret which college football team that person rooted for.

I have also heard numerous times how the Nittany Lions would take care of the Buckeyes in “The Shoe”. In fact, those fans were extremely confident Penn State would win the game and cruise to the playoff this year.

More from Scarlet and Game

During the first three-quarters of Saturday’s game it appeared the Nittany Lions’ fans may have been right all along. But the Buckeye offense led by JT Barrett had other plans, and the “Silver Bullets” played lights out at the end. And that was enough to begin “The sound of silence”.

For some reason Penn State fans just aren’t as vocal now as they have been for the last year.

However, if Ohio State wins the next three games but loses to Michigan and Penn State is 11-1, they won’t be quiet any longer. The Buckeyes will play in the Big Ten Championship game, and the fans who chant “We Are” will be clamoring for the Nittany Lions to make the playoff.

Let’s hope Ohio State wins the last four games so that scenario doesn’t play out. I’m beginning to enjoy “The sound of silence”.
