Ohio State Football: Buckeyes are the best team in college football

The Ohio State Buckeyes are playing the best football of any team in the country at the moment.

Ohio State has been on a roll since the loss to Oklahoma in week two. The way the Buckeyes have performed the last five weeks, it now appears they are the best team in college football.

Those of you who may want to disagree with my assertion, just take a look at these stats Ohio State has put up the last five weeks. You may just change your mind.

Compare the Buckeyes’ and their opponents’ scoring average during that stretch with other contenders for the CFB playoff who have gone undefeated since the second week of the season.

  • Ohio State: 53.2 – 11.2
  • Alabama: 46.8 – 10.8
  • Penn State: 39.25 – 9.75
  • Georgia: 42.4 – 11.8
  • TCU: 39.25 – 24.25
  • Wisconsin: 32 – 14
  • Miami: 33 – 20

Ohio State leads the pack as the Buckeyes’ margin of victory has been 42 points during the five-week stretch. The Crimson Tide comes in second, winning by an average of 36 points and the other teams aren’t even close.

Now if you think it’s just because of the Buckeyes’ strength of schedule, you may want to reconsider. None of the above mentioned teams defeated an opponent during the last five weeks that was still ranked in the AP Top 25 entering week 7 except for TCU. To their credit, the Horned Frogs defeated West Virginia and Oklahoma State during that stretch.

There is plenty of football left to be played and every team mentioned above will have difficult conference games down the stretch. Things are bound to change as they usually do in college football late in the season. And as far as Ohio State is concerned, no other team will face a bigger challenge to make the College Football Playoff.

With games against Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan in the last five weeks of the season it will be difficult for the Buckeyes to run the table. And if they do, they will probably have to meet the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Championship Game.

But for now, no other team in the country is playing as well as Ohio State. The Buckeyes are simply the best team in college football at the moment.
