Local product won’t become a part of the Ohio State basketball program.

We now know whether Dane Goodwin will rejoin the 2018 Ohio State recruiting class or not. The answer is no he won’t. Goodwin announced last night via twitter he would play his college ball for Notre Dame.

Of all the players who left the Ohio State basketball program, and the 2018 recruiting class, Goodwin’s situation is the most curious one of all. He decided to play for the Buckeyes as a high school freshman and seemed like he was very strong in his commitment.

Now he will be playing for the Fighting Irish.

The shooting guard stuck to his guns through two sub par seasons by the Buckeyes and a mass exodus of players from the program. He was the last remaining recruit in the class after Thad Matta was dismissed.

Then, Chris Holtmann was hired as the head coach and shortly afterwards Goodwin decommitted.

Now that the Upper Arlington product has pledged to play for Notre Dame, that leaves Justin Ayrens as the one former 2018 recruit who may be brought back into the fold. I haven’t heard anything about the prospect of that happening lately.

One thing is for certain, Chris Holtmann will be able to bring in the type of players he wants as there aren’t any recruits in the pipeline at the moment. But as he attempts to build his 2018 class, he will be also be working on bringing in another player or two for next season.

At the moment there aren’t enough scholarship players on the Ohio State roster to hold a five on five scrimmage. It may be quite a challenge to add players to the team at this late date.

Every coach wants to put his own stamp on a program when he takes over. Chris Holtmann will certainly have the opportunity do that. Though he isn’t exactly starting from scratch as the Buckeye head coach, his situation isn’t far from it.
