Ohio State Football: Coaches Envious of Urban’s QB Situation?

The Ohio State quarterback situation is one any coach would love to have.

Other than Nick Saban, every coach in America has to be a little jealous of Urban Meyer because of the number of talented players he recruits to Ohio State. But when you consider the quarterbacks Urban will have at his disposal for the 2017 season, even coach Saban has to be green with envy.

I’m not saying every coach would trade their starting quarterback for J.T. Barrett. Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) Jalen Hurts (Alabama) and Jake Browning (Washington) are outstanding quarterbacks, and proven winners who their coaches love.

But the college football season is a long one and injuries do occur. At times a team will have to depend on a second string quarterback for a game or two during an important stretch of the season. How the backup performs can be the difference as to whether a team can stay in contention for a title or ends up short. For that reason every coach in America would trade their stable of quarterbacks for Urban’s in a New York second.

J.T. Barrett: Silver Football Award winner, two-time Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year in the Big Ten, career leader for most touchdowns for Ohio State, etc. There are simply too many other awards, honors and records to mention here, so just click on this link if you want to see more.

I’ll bet 80 to 90 percent of FCS coaches would trade their starting QB for one of these two guys, and they are battling for the backup position behind Barrett.

Joe Burrow: He had a terrific freshman season hitting on 22 of 28 passes for 226 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Two great spring games on a row as well. This year he was 14-22, 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.

I know it was just mop up duty last year and spring games, but isn’t that how most quarterbacks start out? And few of them begin as strong as Burrow has.

Dwayne Haskins: He showed Buckeye fans what the hype was all about. Man does this kid have an arm.

Haskins battled nerves early on but finished the day hitting on 26 of 37 passes, for 293 yards and 3 touchdowns. Pretty good debut don’t you think?.

Tate Martell: How many college football teams have a quarterback who enrolled early following a senior season in which he who won multiple National Player of the Year awards? That would be one, Ohio State. And the player is Tate Martell.

Martell only played a handful of plays in the spring game but introduced himself to Ohio State fans in a proper manner. His first play as a Buckeye he scored on a five yard run, and then had another nice run the next series.

Martell seemed under control in his limited playing time, even though he was playing in front of 80,000 fans in “The Shoe” for the first time. I have a feeling that more than half of the FCS coaches in the country would like to have Martell start for them next season. And he is Urban Meyer’s fourth string QB.

You will hear a lot of coach speak leading up to the 2017 season about how a team’s quarterback situation is just fine, and the head coach couldn’t be happier. But if the microphones were off, and everyone around him took a vow of silence, every coach in America would say he would trade his stable of quarterbacks for the one Urban Meyer has at his disposal.
