Another former Ohio State player auditioning for the NFL?

The Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League kicked off their 2017 season on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Storm. Unfortunately that contest ended with disappointment as the Gladiators lost 46-40. Although the offense struggled to find their rhythm, former Ohio State kicker Drew Basil made the most of his Arena debut nailing all four of his extra point attempts.

After spending a brief time in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, Basil had a short stint in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes. If today was any indication, coming back home to Ohio was just what the doctor ordered.

Anyone who watched the game noticed the excitement in the stands when the former Buckeye walked onto the field and there is very little doubt that he is already a fan favorite after being assigned to the team on March 30th.

More from Scarlet and Game

Most Ohio State fans remember the consistency that he provided as he maintained the primary kicking duties from 2010-2013.

Basil played in 52 career games during his time in Columbus, which lands him tied for second all-time in that category. Fans can see Basil in action next Saturday at home against the Baltimore Brigade.

It’s good to see the former Buckeye still applying his trade at some level. And who knows where this opportunity might lead? If Basil continues to put the ball through the uprights often for the Gladiators, another chance to kick in the NFL is a possibility.

He could get a tryout if an NFL kicker misses a couple of field goals early in the season, especially if one costs their team a game. However it plays out, it’s good to see that former Ohio State kicker Drew Basil is still chasing his dream.
