Ohio State Recruiting Round-Up: Trevon Grimes
By Josh Keatley
A look at one of the 4 star wide receivers in the 2017 Ohio State recruiting class.
Even though signing day has passed, we are still reflecting on how glorious that day was, and how good this Ohio State recruiting class is. If you have been following the Recruiting Round-Up series, you know that there is some phenomenal talent coming to campus and most of it is on the defensive side of the ball.
The only offensive player we have highlighted so far is a “big ugly” on the interior of the offensive line. Last year’s recruiting class brought forward a few exciting skill players and a portion of them saw the field in 2016. In the 2017 class Trevon Grimes seems to be the most promising skill position player we have coming in.
Player: Trevon Grimes
Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Position: Wide Receiver
Height: 6-4
Weight: 202 lbs.
Ranking: 4 Stars
Chose Ohio State Over: Florida & Florida State
The wide receiver position was a tricky one last season, because we saw some highs and lows from the unit. On the plus side, at times we witnessed some extremely impressive young talent in K.J. Hill, Terry McLaurin, and Parris Campbell showcasing their skills. But the negative is, the most threatening weapon was Curtis Samuel and he is departing along with Noah Brown who showed flashes of his elite potential.
Strengths: As you can probably guess from his size, Grimes eats up a lot of ground when running routes. When corners give him cushion, Grimes has the ability to take what they give and make them pay.
Although he does not fit the mold of a typical speed receiver who won’t light up a forty, Grimes blows by receivers when going deep on a consistent basis. His highlight real really showcases his elite speed.

Weaknesses: Grimes manhandled opposing defensive backs in high school even when they lined up in press coverage. But his slender frame leads me to believe that will not be the case early in his collegiate career.
The Big Ten has some thick, strong corners that will take advantage of his lack of strength. It would be nice if Grimes had some experience from the slot, but I saw very little of this from his high school tape. Although not a huge deal and shouldn’t hurt his development, playing the slot takes a slightly different approach and making that adjustment will help him see the field faster.
Comparison: Michael Thomas, 2015: Like Thomas, Grimes shows an insanely competitive attitude and he makes it his personal mission to beat the opponent lined up across from him every play. They also share the ability to track the ball and snag it at its highest point on a consistent basis. Grimes is much better than Thomas was coming out of high school, and if he reaches his potential, he could be making the same kinds of plays at the next level.
Overall: There is a lot of excitement surrounding this Under Armour All-American, but Buckeye fans may need to cool their jets. Grimes is an extremely talented receiver and I never want to completely count a player out.

However, there appears to be some development that needs to take place before Ohio State fans can expect him to make an impact. Grimes may be a great red-shirt candidate because I see him being a year two contributor.
