Gibson to leave Ohio State to play for Cincinnati.

Wide receiver Torrance Gibson has decided to leave Ohio State to play for the University of Cincinnati. Did Gibson make the “right” turn?

You can get to Cincinnati heading towards Columbus either by taking a left turn or a right depending on if you are driving north or south. But in this case I’m talking about the “correct” direction.

It would appear that if Gibson came back to Ohio State he would have had a chance to make an impact in the receiving game in 2017. With Noah Brown leaving for the NFL, there wasn’t a returning wide-out who had more than 18 catches in the 2016 season. Instead he has chosen to play for Cincinnati and Luke Fickell.

Gibson was a highly coveted recruit in the 2015 class. He chose to play for the Buckeyes in part due to the fact Urban Meyer said he could compete at quarterback while most everyone else wanted the 6’4 Gibson to play wide receiver.

However, he soon thought the quickest way to see the field was at wide-out because of the logjam at the quarterback position. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

An early season injury, along with difficulty adapting to wide receiver, resulted in Gibson being red-shirted his freshman year. However, he began to make strides and had an outstanding spring game in April catching six passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Gibson was ready to step in and be that talented player everyone expected him to be, right.

Then it happened, Ohio State suspended Gibson for the fall semester so he was ineligible to play this season. The suspension wasn’t football related and Urban Meyer publicly said he didn’t support the decision.

The Buckeye head coach said he would welcome Gibson back to the team. But after his tweet today, it appears he will not be coming back to Ohio State and will be heading to Cincinnati.

Gibson was gracious to the Ohio State University, his teammates and Buckeye fans when he announced his intentions, so I only wish the best for the young man. I just hope he made the “right” turn this time.
