There will be a new quarterback for the Ohio State football team in 2025. A battle between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job started in the Spring. While Sayin is the leader, that doesn't mean that Kienholz can't come back to win the job.
Still, Ryan Day didn't like the fact that the Buckeyes only had three scholarship quarterbacks. He wanted to make sure that the team had more depth at the most important position on the field. Ohio State added Eli Brickhandler from the spring transfer portal to help add that depth.
The Buckeyes are a good team already, but Day clearly didn't feel comfortable only having three options at the quarterback spot. That's the biggest reason why they decided to add Brickhandler to the roster. That doesn't mean he has any less faith in Sayin or Kienholz.
Added depth is the biggest reason why the Ohio State football program added a fourth quarterback to the roster
Day is big on depth, especially at the most important positions on the field. That includes quarterback, offensive line, and defensive line. He wants to have as much depth at those positions as possible so that the Buckeyes can survive injuries if they occur.
Of course, if the Buckeyes are down to their fourth-string quarterback in 2025, their season is going to be over anyway. They would not be good enough to win the national championship. The same is likely the case if they had to play Tavien St. Clair as the third-string QB.
Ohio State is pleased with the options that they have at the quarterback position for this year and for years to come. Ryan Day has a track record of being able to develop quarterback recruits into great performers. Fans expect that to continue with Sayin or Kienholz this year.
