The Ohio State football program still doesn't have a defensive coordinator. Right after the Buckeyes won the national championship, Jim Knowles decided to head to Penn State to take the same job with them. Ohio State also lost their offensive coordinator and offensive line coach since then.
Both of those vacancies have already been filled. Brian Hartline is the new offensive coordinator, and Keenan Bailey is a co-OC as well. Tyler Bowen is the new offensive line coach. Yet, there is still no defensive coordinator hire for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
There have been rumors that they might be interested in hiring Matt Patricia as their defensive coordinator. That would be the third different outside guy that has been rumored to take the job. This would be Ryan Day's worst idea if he were to decide to bring him to Columbus.
Why the Ohio State football team hiring Matt Patricia would be a disaster
Patricia has a wealth of NFL experience, but I wouldn't say it's good experience. He hasn't coordinated a defense since 2017 with the Patriots. He failed as a head coach with the Lions and then failed again as the offensive coordinator for New England. This past season, he was completely out of football.
It's not just the recent NFL failures that would make this a bad hire. Patricia would be a disaster on the recruiting trail. He's not very personable, which is half the battle on the recruiting trail. Recruits would head for other elite programs instead of coming to Columbus.
There's also an incident that happened back in 1996. He was alleged to have sexually assaulted a woman. He was set to go on trial before the woman decided that going through a trial would have been too emotionally devastating, so the charges were dismissed.
Add all that together, and there are better options for him to choose from to be the new defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Day should be able to get more coaches who are interested in coaching one of the best teams in the country. Even if it takes a little bit longer to find, so be it.
Patricia is not the answer.
