It has been a rough start to the offseason for the Ohio State football program. 30 players have decided to head to the Transfer Portal. In contrast, the Buckeyes have just six players coming in from the portal, although their latest addition is their best one yet.
Still, the Ohio State Buckeyes have a lot of holes that they need to fill to fix their roster heading into next year. They have barely been able to fill some of the holes that they have now created with the various departures that the Buckeyes have had in the portal.
Ryan Day still has plenty of things that they have to figure out in this portal cycle before it closes. Despite the fact that it has been a disaster so far, there are a few things that Ohio State can do to turn things around and turn this cycle into a positive thing.
The Ohio State football team needs to add these kind of players to the roster
Day still has to add a kicker, which, based on the 2025 season, might be the most important roster addition. Had they had someone better than Jayden Fielding, there is a chance that the team would still be playing. Instead, they don't have an answer at this position.
Adding a cornerback is something that Day needs to do, as well. The cornerback spot lost a lot of depth in the portal. Aaron Scott Jr. and Bryce West both headed into the portal, so Ohio State needs another corner. Davison Igbinosun is heading into the NFL Draft, so that adds to the urgency to get a corner.
Getting an offensive lineman and at least one more receiver would really help Ohio State's depth issues at those spots. Adding a running back might be more important, though. Both James Peoples and Sam Dixon headed to the portal, which means their running back depth is nonexistent.
If Day can pull these things off, there is still a chance that Ohio State can have a positive Transfer Portal window.
