Ohio State football fans are some of the most passionate fans in all of college football. They are part of what makes the sport so great. Quite frankly, fans of the Buckeyes are the main reason why Ryan Day is able to make millions of dollars. If the fans didn't care, he wouldn't have a job.
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer understands that. He believes that the fans are a massive part of what drives Ohio State to great things. He wants the university to do more for the fans, and he cites specific examples of what they should do.
Urban Meyer wants Ohio State to put up more statues
While speaking on The Triple Option, Meyer thinks that the Ohio State Buckeyes need to put up more statues honoring the great players of the past.
"I think Ohio State should do a lot more. For decades now, the best program in college football, or one of them, there should be a lot more. Whether it be statues or names up in that stadium, the players that have gone through that stadium- wow. Ask the fans! How many names deserve to be up there?"
Meyer is one of the best coaches to ever be associated with college football. He certainly is qualified to talk about the fans and what traditions make things so great. He knows firsthand just how great the fans are at Ohio State, and he thinks they should be able to honor the players whom the fans love.
Right now, Ohio State has just one statue of a former player on campus, and it's a recent addition. Archie Griffin has a statue on the North Rotunda. He also has his name up in the Ring of Honor. All of the names in the Ring of Honor are Heisman Trophy winners, except for one. That exception is Bill Willis, who was one of the first two African Americans to play professional football in the modern era.
Ohio State should add a couple more statues to the fold
I agree with keeping the Ring of Honor guys to Heisman Trophy winners, as that has to stay special. However, another statue or two wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. There are a couple of players who deserve that honor when it comes to the Buckeyes.
Les Horvath has his name in the Ring of Honor after winning the Heisman Trophy in 1944. However, he also helped the Ohio State Buckeyes win two national championships. His greatness should be honored with a statue somewhere along the Shoe.
Eddie George is the other player who has an argument for a statue. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1995 and set a school record for rushing yards and still holds the record for yards per game in a single season. He ran for 148.2 yards per game during the 1995 season.
Woody Hayes has a statue on campus as a coach. Paul Brown is the only other coach who has an argument for one. Meyer's point is well-taken, though; the university needs to do more for the fans. That's why Ross Bjork's decisions continue to be baffling. Perhaps this changes some things.
