It is football season now, or it needs to be... In the wake of Ohio State's soul-crushing loss to TCU at the buzzer, Buckeyes fans are left wondering if things could have been any different. Ohio State was down 66-64 with 4.3 seconds left on the clock. Somehow, some way, head coach Jake Diebler drew up the worst play you could have imagined with a chance to win it up against the expiring game clock.
It was a Matt Painter paint-splatter masterpiece that Diebler threw up for Bruce Thornton to fail with.

Not sure what this was in the most important moment of the season. pic.twitter.com/wlZJM5hwt5
While Diebler deserves to get crushed for this, it should be noted That Team Up North was able to win a game in a critical spot like this only a season ago. During the Big Ten Tournament, Tre Donaldson was able to take it the length of the floor with 5.3 seconds left to shock Maryland. Yes, Michigan had more time on the clock than Ohio State, but Donaldson proved that magic could be done in the end.
Now that he is with Miami, maybe Donaldson could do something else like this on Friday vs. Missouri?

Unless you receive a great hand-off like this, you should never dribble the ball up the court down late.
Ohio State could learn a thing or two from Dusty May during crunch time
Look. Every game and every situation is different. What is troubling about how Ohio State's season ended is this is not the first time a game has been won or lost at the buzzer. Coaches get paid the big bucks to draw up plays out of timeouts to win in crucial moments like this. May has emerged as one of the very best in the game today. As for Diebler, he will be the butt of every joke in Big Ten country.
Donaldson was put into an advantageous situation to succeed a little over a year ago at Michigan. That is what coaching looks like. The weird part in all this is Donaldson hit the transfer portal anyway to go to Miami. For Thornton to have been loyal to Ohio State to a fault, he deserved far better than what Diebler offered up to him. Ohio State looked so unprepared for the moment. No wonder it lost...
Sadly, we do not get a mulligan here. This was the last game for Thornton at Ohio State. This is how his college basketball career will end. Yes, making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years was a big deal, but Ohio State was more than good enough to advance. In the end, the better and more experienced head coach prevailed in Jamie Dixon. This was not his first rodeo in March...
At this time, this ill-fated play is going to remain stuck in the minds of Ohio State fans for a good while.
