The Ohio State basketball team needs to re-tool their entire roster. Following another year in which they failed to reach the NCAA Tournament, they have to get guys into Columbus who can actually contribute. They did a poor job of that in the transfer portal last offseason.

Ohio State has already lost two players to the transfer portal this offseason, which might not be a bad thing. Neither one of the guys the Buckeyes lost were significant contributors. There have been rumors recently that they offered a ton of money for a former Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio to return home.

It seems those rumors have come true. The Ohio State Buckeyes have gotten a commitment from the transfer portal out of Gabe Cupps, a guard from Indiana. Cupps was a two-time Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio before deciding to play for the Hoosiers in college.

Gabe Cupps commits to the Ohio State basketball program from the transfer portal

Cupps comes to Ohio State without a lot of production at a fellow Big Ten school. In fact, he played in just four games this past season, one of them being against Ohio State. He played much more as a freshman when he appeared in 33 games and averaged just 2.6 points per game in over 21 minutes of action per game.

While Cupps was a really good player in high school, he hasn't done anything in college. If the rumors of how much money Ohio State offered him are true, this is a horrible decision. Cupps hasn't shown the ability to be able to earn minutes on a halfway decent team.

Cupps is happy to be back in his home state. Perhaps that will help him play better. If this is the caliber of transfer recruit that the Buckeyes will be bringing in, they are in for another long season next year.
