Ohio State is tired of getting the short end of the stick when it comes to officiating.
Against Indiana, there were multiple missed pass interference calls against the Hoosiers. Jeremiah Smith kept getting hit before the ball came near him, and no one ever threw a flag. There were a couple of missed holding calls that benefitted the Hoosiers, as well. The roughing the passer call on Jaylen McClain was horrendous, too.
Ryan Day was seen in multiple animated discussions with officials on Saturday against IU. It was all in vain. Day is tired of getting the short end of the stick when it comes to calls against his team, and he has called out the referees.
Ryan Day calls out refs for multiple terrible calls against Ohio State
The final question asked Ryan Day during Tuesday's press conference was about the officials and how bad the calls against his team have been. Day bit his tongue as much as he could, but he still couldn't keep himself from calling out the constant mistakes.
"We turned in several plays in that game. Quite honestly, there was accountability taken. But sometimes you feel like it's a day late and a dollar short. I think these guys are trying. They. mean well. But we know these are big decisions that change people's lives, and so we're going to keep communicating with them...To say that it's not sometimes frustrating would not be true."
Day would go on to specifically mention one of the missed pass interference calls that the officials had regarding Jeremiah Smith.
"When you see a photograph, it takes you back, because you see what you see. There's nothing we can do about anything in the past. I'm not trying to sit here and bash anybody. But you guys saw it. You see the pictures, you see the film. You know what's there. Hope isn't a strategy, but I'm hoping it gets better."
Jeremiah Smith continues to get officiated terribly
Perhaps the biggest injustice continues to be the refusal of referees to throw flags on guys defending Jeremiah Smith. Smith hasn't drawn a pass interference since his freshman season in 2024. Of course, there have been several missed calls involving him.
There is no bigger problem for the officials than correctly officiating Smith. It's something that Day is right to draw attention to. The missed calls have been absolutely horrendous and very easy to see. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see defenders tackle Smith before the ball gets there.
These missed calls better get fixed quickly. With a new quarterback starting now, Ohio State is going to need to get every call possible. It's not right for them to have missed calls go against them, but now they might not have the offensive talent to overcome them.
The Big Ten needs to get its crap together and give the Buckeyes a fair shake. They have to get better officials for their games, or get new officials altogether. There are at least three missed calls against the Buckeyes every game. They even call phantom calls against Ohio State. Day is tired of that, and it cannot continue to happen.
