College football is undergoing some major changes. This past week, news spread that former Browns tight end De'Quan Wright had entered the transfer portal and will return to LSU for a final year of college. It is the first time in history that a former NFL player is returning to college.
A ruling from a judge in some states has allowed this to happen. However, Ryan Day does not seem happy with the ruling that has allowed this to happen. He made it very clear that he does not support what is going on, but he also didn't shut the door on taking advantage of it.
Ryan Day could have Ohio State bring back an NFL player if the possibility comes
While speaking to the media, Day made it clear that he will do what's best for Ohio State when it comes to adding players to the roster this late.
"To think that we are in a situation where, this late in the season, the rosters are not locked in is frustrating, at the very least... Do I like anything about it? Absolutely not. But we have to do what's right for Ohio State. It's sort of a day-to-day thing right now, and like anything, we're just going to try to adapt."
This era of having players who have signed contracts with NFL teams being able to come back and play college football is crazy. Day clearly doesn't want to participate in it, but his hand might be forced. He doesn't want the Buckeyes to have a disadvantage compared to other teams.
It would be surprising to see Day add a player this late in the season. That's especially true because his team is voted as the best in the country in both polls. His team is good enough to compete for a national championship the way it is currently constructed.
Ohio State doesn't need former NFL players to win a title
Day should know his team well enough by this point in camp. Ohio State is talented enough to win a national championship without having former NFL players on its roster. The only way it would make sense to add someone is if they were a former Buckeye who played on the team a year ago.
Caden Curry is the only player who comes to mind who could fit the bill, as he was a sixth-round pick by the Colts. However, he has played well in the preseason so far, so he will likely make the final roster. No other former Buckeye makes sense to bring back.
So far, only LSU has made the decision to bring back a player who was on an NFL roster. Lane Kiffin has proven time and time again that he has no conscience, so that's not surprising. It would be surprising if Day followed suit, considering how much he hates the idea.
Expect the roster that the Buckeyes have now to be the one that is playing against Ball State in Week 1.
