Heading into the 2026 season, the Ohio State Buckeyes are perceived as the best team in the country. They are rated number one in both polls for the first time since 2015. With how good the offense is projected to be, the Buckeyes should be able to outscore most of their opponents.
Programs in the SEC are trying to add NFL players in order to compete with the Big Ten. Alabama hasn't done that, but Kalen DeBoer is certainly on the hot seat this season. Colin Cowherd believes that the Crimson Tide are jealous of what Ohio State has to offer.

While speaking on The Joel Klatt Show, Cowherd explained that Alabama knows they aren't as talented as the Buckeyes anymore.
"Alabama fans have to come to terms with, listen, man, we don't have Ohio State players. So don't get into a really vicious cycle where you keep firing coaches because you're not winning...But I think the key for the SEC is now: will the Big Ten become the SEC? If you can't beat Ryan Day, you're running through coaches."
Cowherd went on to say that the SEC is delusional if they think they can compete with the likes of Ohio State and the Big Ten every year. He's right, especially now that NIL is such a big factor in recruiting. It's clear that the schools down south don't have the funds to compete.
That's such a big reason why LSU is trying to add pro players. Lane Kiffin knows he's not good enough to win a national championship without them. Meanwhile, Day and his staff utilize the Transfer Portal and the high school ranks well enough to make the College Football Playoff every single year.
Ohio State should make the CFP in spite of a tough schedule
The Buckeyes have one of the toughest schedules in the country. They play six teams that are ranked in the preseason top 25. Yet, the Buckeyes are probably going to be good enough to make the College Football Playoff, anyway. Even if they lose two games, they should be able to make it.
National pundits are starting to come to that conclusion. The Buckeyes are going to be a scary team to face for everyone else, in addition to the fact that they have the most talented roster in the country. That is what Cowherd is emphasizing, and the SEC is refusing to accept that.
Week 2 will be an enormous week for Ohio State to further push that narrative. Beating Texas in Austin at night would be a fantastic way for the Big Ten to start off against the SEC this season. Not just that, but it would give the Buckeyes a buffer to lose a game later in the year.
Jeremiah Smith and Julian Sayin are going to be the focal point of this team. Having them centered as the most important offensive players is the key to success all year long.
