What to expect from the newest Ohio State football freshman to shed his stripe
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had another freshman shed their black stripe during Spring practice. The newest player to do so is one of the quarterbacks who came in the 2024 recruiting class. That player is Alabama transfer Julian Sayin, who left Bama after Nick Saban retired.
Sayin becomes the first of the two freshmen quarterbacks to shed his stripe. He was graded as the third-best quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class and was a five-star recruit. Sayin was expected to be the next great Alabama quarterback but then decided to head to Ohio State after Saban retired.
So far this Spring, Sayin has looked pretty darn good. As far as freshmen go, he has done a really good job of catching the staff's eyes. Even with that, He doesn't really have a chance to start in 2024. He has both Will Howard and Devin Brown ahead of him on the depth chart.
With that being said, what can we expect from Sayin moving forward? The Buckeyes will need a new starter after this season once Howard is gone. It's presumed that the battle will consist of Sayin, Air Noland, and incoming freshman Tavien St. Clair. Brown will likely transfer at that point in my view, but then again, he stayed this year.
Sayin has all of the tools to be a really good player. He has a strong arm and accuracy, and he can move around. Not only that, but he won some big games in high school. I truly think it's going to be a bloodbath between him and Noland for that starting spot in 2025 because I really like Noland too.
Sayin has the edge in that battle right now because Noland still has his black stripe and Sayin doesn't. That counts for something as we head into the Spring Game this weekend.
