What the Ohio State football program should do best offensively this season
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team is going to be one of the best teams in the country this season all around. On defense, they are going to be one of the best teams in the country. That is especially true in the secondary where they got even better with the addition of Caleb Downs.
On offense, there is a bit more turnover. The Buckeyes lose their best player in Marvin Harrison Jr. They also will have a new quarterback for the third time in as many years. With Kyle McCord now at Syracuse, Will Howard is the likely starter to get the offense going.
So with changes happening in those two position groups, what will they do best on offense? They keep TreVeyon Henderson and add Quinshon Judkins to the running back room, but they have a new running backs coach and a new offensive coordinator.
This team should still be primarily a passing team. That should still be what they do best. Despite being without Harrison Jr., they still have the best receiver group in the country. They have another first-round pick in that room with Emeka Egbuka after he decided to stay.
With Chip Kelly calling the plays I would expect him to conjure up some creative pass plays to get Egbuka the ball as much as possible. Carnell Tate should be the number two receiver and Jeremiah Smith is trending towards being the third receiver as a true freshman.
Howard should be a slight upgrade over McCord as a quarterback. While he doesn't have the highest ceiling of the group, he still is the most experienced and should have the confidence necessary to drive the Ohio State football down the field when they need a big drive, something McCord did against Notre Dame but failed to do against Michigan.
The offensive numbers should be a little bit closer to what the Buckeyes put up in 2022. They're going to be a really good offense anyway.
