The linebacker room is a tricky room. It's a room that has a lot of talent but not a lot of spots to get playing time. Since Jim Knowles took over, typically only two linebackers play at a given time. This season, there will be three guys who rotate over those two spots.

C.J. Hicks, Cody Simon, and Sonny Styles will be the guys at linebacker. Two of those guys are former five-star recruits. Styles is moving to linebacker to make room for Caleb Downs coming in at safety. With just two starting spots, that doesn't leave a lot of room for other guys to crack that rotation.

That leads us to Gabe Powers. Powers was a four-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class. He was the 2021 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Ohio out of Marysville High School. Since coming in, he hasn't been able to crack the starting linebacker rotation.

Now that he's a junior, I don't see him getting a shot at that unless he really improves next season. Even then, he'd still be behind Hicks and Styles in the rotation. I'd imagine that he wants to go somewhere that he'd get some playing time so he can showcase what he can do.

Perhaps Powers always dreamed of playing for the Ohio State football program though. Maybe as an in-state kid, he would rather just stay in Columbus close to his family. I would admire that. He could end up just being a special teams guy, which isn't a bad thing.

We'll see if any of these guys enter their names into the portal before the window closes at the end of the month. I'd be surprised if at least one of these guys didn't.
