Three big winners of Ohio State football fall camp
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will be playing football in just over a week. They have been waiting for this moment ever since they lost to Michigan in the final game of the regular season in 2023. The Cotton Bowl was further embarrassment that made them eager for this year to come around.
This roster is absolutely loaded from top to bottom. On both sides of the ball, the Buckeyes are ready to erase the bad memories from last season and replace them with all-time great memories. This team has its sight set on a national championship and nothing less is good enough.
Even though the team is loaded, there are still some players who have been fighting for starting spots. There were battles going on for starter's reps and some of the battles aren't quite finished yet. Even so, some players have emerged as undisputed winners of Fall camp.
There are three guys who have come out of camp in much better standing than they were entering the Fall. Even if some of these guys don't win a starting spot, they are in a position where they are actually battling for playing time, which is a win in itself.
The first player on this list is someone who is making the battle for right guard a lot closer than everyone thought it was going to be.
1. Tegra Tshabola
The battle at right guard remains the most intriguing battle on the entire team. When the Spring rolled around, it was a four-person battle for the job. Carson Hinzman, Seth McLaughlin, Tegra Tshabola, and Luke Montgomery were all fighting for that starting spot on the offensive line.
It seems that McLaughlin will start at center and Montgomery has faded. That leaves the battle between Hinzman and Tshabola. Hinzman was the starting center last year so it seemed like he was the favorite to win the starting spot at guard considering it's his natural position.
Tshabola has made this a lot closer than people thought. I thought that Hinzman was going to be the starter at guard no questions asked after McLaughlin was solidified at center. Now, I'm not so sure. I still think Hinzman might win the battle, but Tshabola has impressed everyone on the coaching staff.
Even if Tshabola doesn't win the battle this season, he has solidified himself as a starter next season and the season after that if he decides to stay. Ryan Day and Chip Kelly love him and really like what they've seen out of him. He could be the starter at left guard next year if Donovan Jackson leaves or at tackle, which is his natural spot.
The second player who has emerged as a winner has already been announced as a starter at his position.
