There's a clear winner in the 2014 Ohio State football vs. 2023 Michigan debate
By Ryan Stano
One of the most pointless things people do on social media is argue about which championship teams are better. Everyone thinks their team was the best one. The same thing has happened recently with the debate between the 2014 Ohio State football team and the 2023 Michigan team.
I tend to stay out of these debates because they seem to go in circles. There's no way that we can ever know for sure which national champion was better than the other. Those two teams can't play each other on the field. However, I make an exception here because the answer is clear.
The Ohio State football team from 2014 had to go through an absolute gauntlet. The Big Ten was near the height of its powers back then. Not only that, but Alabama was still a national power. Ohio State took down five ranked opponents during the course of their title run.
Michigan did as well, but their opponents were much weaker. The Big Ten was pretty awful last year except for Ohio State. Last year's Ohio State football team was the weakest one they've had since 2018. The only great team Michigan had to beat was Washington. Alabama shouldn't have even been in the CFP. Florida State should've.
The Buckeyes battled two undefeated teams in the first-ever CFP. They did so with a third-string quarterback. If either Braxton Miller or J.T. Barrett were healthy, they would wax last year's Michigan team up and down the field. I think they'd still beat them even with Cardale Jones.
Again, this argument is dumb because we'll never get a true answer. It's just about time that Michigan has a worthy team to throw into that debate. Of course, how worthy are they? They cheated through half the season, so there will forever be an asterisk next to the 2023 national champion.
