The QB competition for the Ohio State football team is really happening in 2025
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program hasn't named a starting quarterback for the upcoming season yet. Ryan Day is doing that to foster some competition and keep things competitive throughout the Fall. Day knows that will be the best way to get the best out of his team.
While there is a lot of work that the quarterbacks can do between now and the beginning of the season, Will Howard is still the favorite to win the job. He's the guy that Day brought in from the transfer portal for a reason. He didn't come to Columbus to sit on the bench.
Julian Sayin and Devin Brown are trying their best to catch Howard and start this year. I don't think I can. The more interesting quarterback battle will be taking place in 2025. Sayin, Brown, Air Noland, and Tavien St. Clair are all going to be fighting for that top spot.
Which of those four quarterbacks is going to be the best option? (I'm assuming Lincoln Kineholz will have transferred by then.) Based on what we saw during the Spring Game, Noland and Sayin are going to have a heck of a battle between them. They both showed flashes in that game.
Noland showed that he has a lot to offer in the read-option game. Sayin showed that he's not afraid to make any throw on the field. Both threw an interception though, so they have some things to work on. Their both freshmen though so they will learn with experience.
I would be shocked if anyone besides Howard started the 2024 season as the starting quarterback. He performed the best in the Spring Game despite not taking any chances down the field. He'll have to get more aggressive once Fall camp gets here.
In 2025, I don't think being too aggressive is going to be a problem.
