The Ohio State football team has added a player from the transfer portal at an interesting position.

The Ohio State football team was very active in the transfer portal right after the season ended. They grabbed players at a bunch of different positions. They grabbed a stud running back, one of the best safeties in the country, a new starting quarterback, and a potentially new starting offensive lineman.

Once the Spring rolled around, the Buckeyes were much less active. They didn't look like they were going to add anyone at all. The Buckeyes did end up adding a walk-on punter a few days ago. But before Friday morning, they hadn't added any scholarship players from the Spring portal.

That changed on Friday morning. The Ohio State football team added Keenan Nelson Jr. from South Carolina. He's a safety who played two seasons with the Gamecocks. He actually redshirted in 2022 and has only recorded a total of 13 tackles in his two collegiate seasons.

When he was coming out of high school, Nelson jr. was a four-star recruit. He clearly has some talent. It's interesting that the Buckeyes decided to add a player at the safety position. It's not a position that they lack depth at or anything like that. Yet, the Buckeyes decided to add a safety anyway.

I do think Nelson Jr. will help Ohio State, just not this season. I don't think he's going to see much playing time at all. The Buckeyes still have Lathan Ransom and Caleb Downs, so those are the two safeties who are going to play the most. Jordan Hancock will be nickel back as well.

I'm not sure that the Buckeyes will grab any other players from the transfer portal. They have been pretty quiet and it makes sense that they have been. I think they like what they have as they head into the Summer and then the Fall.
