The Ohio State football program now knows the Big Ten tiebreakers
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team can no longer sit back and just dominate the Big Ten East. Ever since the Big Ten conference added a 12th team in Nebraska, the Buckeyes have owned the Big Ten East. Beating up on Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers every year was very nice.
Ohio State no longer has that luxury. The Big Ten is now 18 teams full and there will no longer be divisions. That means that the top two teams in the conference will make the Big Ten Championship. That also means that there could be a rematch at the end of the year.
The Big Ten Conference has now released what the tiebreakers will be in case there are a couple of teams tied for a spot in the championship game. Of course, the Ohio State Buckeyes are hoping they don't have to deal with that scenario because they can just go undefeated in Big Ten play.
The Big Ten Conference unveils tiebreaker scenarios for the Ohio State football team and the rest of the Big Ten
In the case of a tie at the end of the year, the Big Ten will award the tiebreaker based on head-to-head record against common conference opponents first if there was no head-to-head matchup during the season. That will solve the issue in most cases right off the bat because of so many common opponents throughout the conference.
If that doesn't fix the situation, the tiebreaker moves down to common opponents with the best conference record. Again, I don't see a scenario in which any further tiebreaker is used after this, but it could theoretically happen. If you want to see all of the tiebreakers, the Big Ten listed them out.
Hopefully, the Ohio State football team doesn't have to deal with any of this and they can just win all of their games and not worry. That's their goal as the season starts this weekend.
