The 3 best first-year starting QBs in recent Ohio State football history
By Ryan Stano
2. Dwayne Haskins
The late Dwayne Haskins only started for the Ohio State football program for one season, but it was a really good one. It was back in 2018 and it was one of the best seasons in program history. Haskins set the Big Ten record for passing with 4,831 yards and a whopping 50 touchdowns while completing 70% of his passing.
Haskins was dynamic as a passer his arm strength was on full display and he was accurate to all parts of the field. He set the Ohio State record for passing yards in a game in the loss against Purdue, but that was later overtaken by Stroud's performance in the Rose Bowl.
That loss to Purdue is why Haskins isn't higher on this list. The loss wasn't even his fault. His defense failed him. Still, Haskins didn't get the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff and that is the ultimate goal. Had he done that, it might have been the greatest Ohio State quarterbacking season since Troy Smith.
Haskins was a first-round pick because of his great play in that one season as a starter. Unfortunately, he wasn't successful with the Washington Football Team and ended up getting released. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers but never played for them before tragically passing away.
It's a shame we never got to see Haskins try to get a second chance. He probably would have been the starter for the Steelers this year now that they have moved on from Kenny Pickett. We'll never know though.
The final player on this list led the greatest Ohio State football team I've ever seen.
