Ohio State Football: Ryan Day improves QB room back to elite status
Ryan Day and the Ohio State football program said enough is enough. Day deemed that Kyle McCord's play was not up to Ohio State's elite standard and he went out on a mission to fix that this offseason. The mission appears to be accomplished.
Day first told Kyle McCord that he would have to compete for his starting role in 2024. McCord instantly entered the transfer portal, and in all honesty, that decision seems to be best for everyone involved.
Secondly, Day went out and got a transfer quarterback who Day believes has all the tools to succeed. Will Howard comes in with 27 starts of experience and has every physical trait that an elite quarterback has. It's up to Howard and the coaching staff to get the most out of him for his last season of college eligibility in 2024.
Day then proceeded to upgrade the quarterback room in a different way by bringing in the experienced Bill O'Brien to coach them. O'Brien is an immense upgrade over Corey Dennis, who will be moved to another role within the program. O'Brien is an elite quarterback coach with a proven track record.
In addition to all this, Day set the room up for the future by not only grabbing a five-star quarterback in Air Noland during the recruiting cycle, but he then took advantage of Nick Saban's departure at Alabama to add another five-star to the room in Julian Sayin.
Ryan Day has been blessed with Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud during his tenure as head coach. He got both on campus and coached the heck out of them to turn them into future first-round NFL draft picks. He saw to talent was not good enough in the room in 2023 and proceeded to do something about it.
Maybe Ryan Day is learning from his mistakes of the past. Maybe he saw that the talent was not good enough heading into 2023 but his ego of being a top-notch quarterback developer got in the way. Well, it isn't this time. Day fixed the room for 2024 and for the future. Hopefully, this all pans out.
