The Ohio State football team had a pretty good day against Akron. They won the game 52-6, which is the most important thing about the game. Despite not being able to cover, they had some good moments on both sides of the ball. They look like a team that can contend for a title.

One of the bright spots of the game was true-freshman Jeremiah Smith. Smith had an incredible debut the likes of which Ohio State hasn't seen since 1996. He had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns and looked like the best player on the field for most of the game.

It looks like we can expect a lot more games with stat lines like that from Smith this season. Despite that great debut, he was not named as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. In fact, a former Ohio State commit leapfrogged him for that honor for Week 1.

Ohio State football player Jeremiah Smith snubbed from award

Smith didn't get the award because former Buckeye commit Dylan Raiola did. He's the quarterback for Nebraska after de-committing from both the Buckeyes and Georgia last year. He took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week after the Cornhuskers beat UTEP 40-7.

Raiola really wasn't that impressive. He was 19-27 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. It's not like he lit it up or anything like that. Personally, I think it's harder for a receiver to put up the kind of numbers that Smith did because he doesn't get the ball every single play.

Raiola and the Cornhuskers will visit the Shoe later this year and it won't be fun for him. Smith will continue to play great and very well could be the best receiver that the Buckeyes have already. He's that talented of a player.

I'm sure Smith will win this award at some point this season.
