The Ohio State football team will have Chip Kelly leading the offense after a wild offseason offensive coordinator saga. Now that he and Ryan Day are teaming up again, the offense should be much better in terms of play-calling than it has been in the last few years.

The worst part of the Buckeyes last year was the offensive line. Ohio State wasn't able to run the ball consistently last year. Poor blocking was a big reason why. They weren't able to get any push up front when it mattered in short-yardage situations. That's something that should change this year.

With Kelly as the new play-caller, he should be able to scheme up better run plays. His UCLA teams were able to run the ball very well while he was the head coach. Justin Frye was the offensive line coach for Kelly at UCLA and actually showed some good things.

Since Frye was hired by the Buckeyes, things haven't quite worked out as they had hoped. But I think Kelly should be able to get the best out of Frye. Frye was pretty good under the tutelage of Kelly. I'm also not just talking about the run game either.

Pass protection was a big problem in the final two games of the year for the Ohio State football team. The tackles were not good at keeping the quarterback clean. While that is partly a personnel issue, coaching can certainly help fix that issue too, as will scheme.

Kelly is an excellent play-caller who is able to scheme up plays to get his best players the ball in the best possible places to do damage, all while covering up weaknesses. He should be able to help scheme up plays that will help fix the tackle issue.

Ohio State should be able to get their offensive numbers back in line with what they were prior to last season.
