Ohio State basketball program could move on from Chris Holtmann as soon as today
By Ryan Stano
If you've watched a single Ohio State basketball game over the last couple of seasons, you know that the team hasn't been good enough. They just lost their 16th straight road game on Tuesday after they lost to Wisconsin. In that game, they scored just 21 points in the first half.
Ohio State missed the NCAA Tournament last year after finishing under .500. They are going to miss it again this year. It's the worst two-season stretch for the Buckeyes in the last 25 years. It sounds like there will finally be some accountability for how bad the team has been.
There are rumors floating around that Chris Holtmann could be fired as soon as today. It doesn't look like he will last past the Purdue game on Sunday if he isn't let go today. This would be a massive change for Gene Smith considering he has never fired a coach in the middle of the season with the football or basketball programs.
If Holtmann is fired, it's been a long time coming. The extension Smith gave him was terrible and wasn't earned. They need someone new to lead the program and get some talent who can shoot and defend the three. That's something that has been lacking under Holtmann in his seven seasons.
There's no word on who could potentially replace Holtmann, but it has to be someone already on staff. My guess is it would be Jake Diebler. His job will be to recruit the guys who are currently on the roster to stay next year, although only a few guys are valuable enough to keep.
Bruce Thornton, Felix Okpara, and Devin Royal are the only guys on the roster I think are valuable enough to keep next season. Everyone else is expendable. It's time for a new era of Ohio State basketball.
We'll let you know as soon as anything official comes down
