Michigan poaches an Ohio State football coach
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team only had to make a couple of coaching changes this offseason, but they were meaningful. They got rid of Perry Eliano and brought in Matt Guerrieri to coach the safeties. They fired Parker Fleming as special teams coordinator. The Buckeyes also promoted James Laurinaitis to a full-time linebackers coach.
Michigan, on the other hand, has had to replace a ton of coaches on their staff. After Jim Harbaugh left for the Chargers, hes took some of this guys from TTUN with him. Other guys left to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Now, they are still trying to fill their coaching staff.
One of the spots they are trying to fill is the role of running backs coach. New coach Sherrone Moore decided not to retain former Michigan running back Mike Hart as the coach. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, he has informed Ohio State that he is taking the job.
Alford has been with the Buckeyes for almost a decade, coming to Columbus in 2015. He has recruited and developed running backs such as J.K. Dobbins. Ezekiel Elliott, and TreVeyon Henderson. All of those players have been great backs for the Buckeyes.
I'm not really sure why Alford decided to make this move. It's not like Michigan is going to be any good this year. Alford has done a pretty good job in Columbus with his recruiting, so this is a loss. Ohio State now has to scramble late in the cycle to find someone.
However, Day was apparently convinced to not let him go in the offseason because of how the running game has stalled in the last couple of years. He gets his wish and now has to replace him in the middle of Spring practice. Ohio State is one of the favorites to not just win the Big Ten, but win a national championship.
We'll keep you advised on anything more that might happen on this front. Perhaps he's getting a boatload of money.
