The Ohio State basketball team has had to rework its roster in the offseason. They lost a bunch of players to the transfer portal and have brought a bunch of players from the portal in to replace those guys. That's how modern college basketball works. The portal is a big part of roster building.

Jake Diebler knows this and he has done a lot of the work in the portal in his first season as head coach. There is still one roster spot open for the Buckeyes that hasn't been filled. It was thought that they would have filled it by now, but it still sits open.

Diebler was asked about that final roster spot and what he expects to do with it. Diebler answered the question, although he didn't give a lot of insight as to how he might decide to use it. This was his response:

There are still a lot of players who are in the portal looking for teams to head to. Perhaps Diebler was keeping a spot open in case Dan Hurley left UConn for the Lakers job. That's not happening, so maybe he has to go back into the portal to look at who's still in there.

Of course, Diebler could wait until the NBA Draft and see if he can get someone who wasn't drafted. There are guys who can come back if they end up not being drafted thanks to a rule change a couple of years back. That could be a way to get some more experience for this team.

We don't know how Diebler plans to fill that final roster spot, but at least he's not planning on leaving it open. To be honest, there aren't that many impact players left in the portal. It'll be interesting to see how that final spot is filled.
