Ex-Ohio State football player released by the Chargers in anticipation of retirement
By Ryan Stano
One of the most successful former Ohio State football players in the NFL has been Corey Linsley. Linsley was a fifth-round pick back in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. After fighting to make the team, it wasn't long before he established himself as a starter.
Ever since his rookie season, he has started every single game that he's been healthy. He has been incredibly reliable over the course of his career. He was so good that he signed a free-agent deal with the Chargers for five years and $62.5 million, which made him the highest-paid center in the league.
Linsley immediately paid off that investment by being named Second-Team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl in 2021. The previous year, he was First-team All-Pro. He showed that the Chargers were right to have faith in him. Now, his career looks to be over in the NFL
The Chargers have decided to release Linsley. It is in anticipation of him retiring from the league at the age of 32. That would mean that Linsley would have played in the league for a decade at an extremely high level, which is something to be incredibly proud of.
That contract he got from Los Angeles is the ultimate sign that he was a great player. Offensive linemen don't get massive contracts like that unless they are truly one of the elite players. He was a three-time team captain for the Chargers too, which shows how much the team respected him as a leader.
If this is the end for Linsley, he's been great. The former Ohio State football player has been one of the best pro players in recent years, regardless of position. It'd be nice if the current roster could get players like Linsley on it too though.
