By Jon Rhoades
Wednesday night, Ohio State had its weekly media availability with players and linebacker Arvell Reese sat down to answer questions. He shed light on the major differences between last season and this year, reflecting on his growth and the team’s evolution. Reese, a promising young player, has clearly matured on and off the field. As he prepares for the new season, he emphasizes that the changes go beyond just the physical aspects of the game.
One of the first things Reese touched on was his personal development. "Last year, I was just trying to figure things out, man," Reese admitted, explaining how he felt a bit overwhelmed when he first joined the team. Adjusting to the pace and intensity of collegiate football at Ohio State was a steep learning curve for him.
"I wasn’t really where I wanted to be mentally or physically."

Reese feels a marked difference this year, specifically in terms of his confidence and understanding of the game. "It’s about growth, for sure," he said, speaking about how his mindset evolved. He’s no longer trying to just keep up with the speed of the game. Instead, he’s more focused on mastering his role and contributing at a higher level.
"This year, I feel like I’m more locked in, more comfortable with what’s going on around me."

Another critical difference Reese highlighted was the shift in team dynamics. "We’ve got a different energy this year," he explained. According to him, the team’s chemistry has improved, and there's a stronger sense of unity. Reese believes this change has been crucial in fostering a more focused and determined squad heading into the season.
"Everyone is on the same page. Last year, we had some great leaders, but now it feels like we’re all stepping up. It’s more of a collective thing."

The linebacker also mentioned that the increased competition within the team has helped elevate everyone's performance. "There’s a lot of depth now," he said, noting that the team is pushing each other harder in practices. This internal competition has created an environment where players are constantly striving to improve, leading to overall growth.
"You can’t take a day off because someone is always right behind you, ready to take your spot,"

Ultimately, Reese’s reflections on the differences between last year and this year paint a picture of a player evolving with his team. "It’s about being better every day," he concluded, pointing to the importance of consistency and focus. Reese's comments suggest that this year's team differs from last year.
While many of the same players remain, their attitudes and leadership have improved and created a culture of toughness and working to be not only the most talented team in the nation but the hardest-working, most determined team in the nation.
The changes have been transformative for Reese, both personally and collectively. His growth mirrors that of the team; he is talented, hard-working, and tough, just like the 2024 Ohio State Buckeyes.
