After commitment, Ohio State football team made the right decision letting Alford go
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program had to navigate something annoying in the middle of Spring practice. They had to find a new running backs coach after Tony Alford decided to leave for Michigan. He left shortly into practice after Michigan's left for a new job.
Instead of getting his team ready for the season, Day had to spend more time finding a new coach, He'd already had to do that when Bill O'Brien, the offensive coordinator he originally hired, left to be the head coach at Boston College. Day ended up with Chip Kelly instead.
Day and Kelly decided to hire Carlos Locklyn as Alford's replacement. Michigan is already seeing why the Buckeyes decided to let him walk. Since he's left for TTUN, Alford has not secured a single recruit for either the 2025 recruiting class or 2026. Locklyn now has.
Locklyn was able to get Bo Jackson to commit after his visit this past weekend. He has shown the ability to quickly establish relationships with running backs since coming to Columbus. Now, we get to see if he can develop running backs as well as Alford was able to early in his Ohio State football coaching career.
Day did not try to talk Alford into leaving. In fact, he almost fired him in the offseason. The fact is, he might have been secretly happy that Alford found another job. He just probably wished that he had left to go to any other school than that one.
Only time will tell if Locklyn ends up being a home run hire. So far, he has done good things. He now needs to be able to get TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins to play at the highest level possible. His biggest challenged will be to get the freshmen who are behind them ready for next year.
