Paul Finebaum doesn't believe Urban Meyer achieved all he could have during his time in Columbus, coaching the Ohio State University's football team.
Finebaum snuck in the shot during an extended compliment about where the Buckeyes are in the current day under Ryan Day. Jim Tressel's name was also evoked, but not criticized in the same way as Meyer's was.
According to the talking head, Meyer "blew more titles" than anyone he can remember.
“I think Ohio State’s always been capable of doing it. This program won one national championship under (Jim) Tressel, one under Urban (Meyer), I’ll tell you what, it should have been a dynasty already because Urban Meyer blew more national championships than anybody that I can remember. I think it’s on the verge. I think it’s very close to being a year-in, year-out contender," Finebaum said on his show.
Many of Meyer's teams had one or two unforgivable losses. The Michigan State Spartans in 2015, the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2017, and the Purdue Boilermakers in 2018 were all games that should've sent the Buckeyes into the CFP. Instead, they became losses that downgraded them to one of the non-playoff New Year's Six bowls.
That last point right there is key. We're talking about a head coach whose teams made a NY6 bowl every year.
To make matters better for Meyer's legacy, he found the head coach that Finebaum feels is capable of leading a dynasty. Day was hired in 2017 during the late Meyer era.
While Buckeye fans have every right to believe their NFL star-filled rosters could've won more titles from 2012-2018, most dynasties across the sports world would've taken the consistent winning Meyer provided OSU.
Finebaum was representing ESPN here and taking a shot at a FOX guy. Not saying that's what inspired the comment, but it's definitely what made him more comfortable saying it.
