One Ohio State football coach continues to defy the haters

Despite calls for him to retire, he seems to be doing as well as ever over the last couple of seasons.

The Ohio State football team has always had solid defensive linemen. Over the last decade, they have produced several first-round talents. Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa, and Chase Young are just some of the defensive ends who have turned into first-round picks in recent years.

Larry Johnson has been the guy to coach all of them. For years, he was seen as the best defensive line coach in the business. He not only recruited top-shelf talent, but he was able to further develop their skills so that they could succeed at the next level.

After the Buckeyes won a national championship, some fans wanted to see Johnson retire. He has been coaching for quite a while and has been with the Ohio State Buckeyes since 2014. Yet, he has ignored those calls and has had a resurgence over the last couple of years.

Johnson has done a much better job on the recruiting trail over the last couple of years. He was able to bring in Eddrick Houston, who was a high four-star recruit a couple of years ago. Not only that, but he also landed Khary Wilder this past cycle, who was a five-star recruit for some time.

Adding those two players to the Buckeyes shows that Johnson still has pull when it comes to high school recruits. He was also instrumental in adding three defensive linemen from the Transfer Portal this past cycle. It's clear that other players and recruits see him as someone who can still coach.

Johnson is in his mid-70s now, so it's unclear just how long he will continue to coach. As long as he's still landing recruits and developing guys into NFL draft picks, Ryan Day will be happy to keep him. That seems like it's going to continue to happen.
