One fired Ohio State football coach is probably smiling right now
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team made a lot of changes to the coaching staff in the offseason. They added a new safeties coach, a new offensive coordinator, and a new running backs coach. It was an offseason of change when it came to the coaching staff.
Another change that was made was the firing of Parker Fleming. Ryan Day decided to part ways with the special teams coordinator after a couple of years of having really bad special teams play. Fleming wasn't adding any value to the team and was taking up a full-time coaching spot.
We are now six games into the Buckeyes' season. Somehow, the special teams have been worse this season. They have had a multitude of mistakes, not just in the Oregon game that they lost, but all year long. I'm sure wherever he is, Fleming is smiling right now.
Former Ohio State football coach has to be smiling after special teams failures
So far this year, the Buckeyes have muffed a punt, kicked the ball three straight times out of bounds on a kickoff, and had an onside kick recovered against them. The punting, which was bad last year, has somehow been worse. Neither punter the Buckeyes have used has been good.
Joe McGuire has averaged 41.3 yards on his punts this season. Nick McLarty has averaged 32.5 yards on his only two punts of the year. The fact that they can't get a punter who is any good is absolutely baffling. Ryan Day's handling of the special teams has been horrible.
Fleming has to feel vindicated. While the special teams weren't good under his watch, they have declined even more without him. This is a team that has a lot of problems that need to be fixed if they want to contend for a national championship. Special teams are one of the needs.
