Coming into this season, the Ohio State football team had the preseason favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Jeremiah Smith was the leading candidate after he had an incredible run during the College Football Playoff. He firmly established himself as the best player in the country.
Smith has played well, but he might not be the top candidate on the Buckeyes to win the award anymore. That might go to his quarterback, Julian Sayin. Sayin has put up some impressive numbers in his first season as a starting quarterback. The redshirt freshman showed how good he can be in the game against Wisconsin, where he threw for almost 400 yards.
So far this season Sayin has thrown for 1,932 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. He has completed an astounding 80 percent of his passes, as well. One of his teammates believes that he should win the Heisman. In fact, he actually guaranteed that Sayin would walk away with the trophy.
Brandon Inniss guarantees that Ohio State QB Julian Sayin will win the Heisman
Speaking after practice on Wednesday night, team captain and receiver Brandon Inniss essentially guaranteed that Sayin will win the Heisman Trophy.
"Julian is Julian. He comes in here and works every day. His head doesn't get too big. He's very humble, and he's definitely going to win that (Heisman Trophy). He's definitely going to win that, for sure."
Sayin has proven that he can command the offense and not just manage the offense, but excel in it. He's done a fantastic job of being able to bring the best out of both Smith and Carnell Tate. Tate looks like a first-round talent at receiver with what he's been able to do this year.
The Heisman usually goes to the best player on the best team. These Ohio State Buckeyes are playing like the best team, and Sayin certainly looks like one of the best players. If he keeps putting up these numbers and Ohio State keeps winning, there's little doubt he'll be taking that award home.
