The Ohio State women's hockey team has played in each of the last three national championships. In those games, the Buckeyes have played Wisconsin in each of them. They went 1-1 in the first two games with the third matchup coming on Sunday night.
For most of the game, the Ohio State Buckeyes looked like they were in control. They looked like they were going to come out on top and win it all. That was until some unfortunate penalties down the stretch gave Wisconsin a chance to tie it and send it into overtime.
While leading 3-2, the Buckeyes were called for a penalty that gave the Badgers a power play for the rest of regulation. During that ensuing penalty kill, they were called for an illegal hand pass. That gave the Badgers a chance for a penalty shot with 18 seconds left to tie it up.
The Ohio State women's hockey team loses to Wisconsin in the national championship
On that penalty shot, the Badgers were able to score and tie the game. That sent it into overtime. Once that happened, you could see that the Buckeyes had no chance of winning in overtime. All of the momentum that they had built throughout the rest of the game was gone.
Wisconsin ended up scoring in overtime to take the national championship 4-3. It was a disappointing end for the Ohio State women's hockey team after having such a great season. It was a painful way to lose the game. It's something that will stick with these women for a long time.
Had the Buckeyes not committed that penalty, they likely would have won the game. Instead, they come up just short. That's okay, though. The Buckeyes will come out next year as strong as ever looking to get back to the national championship.
