The Ohio State Women's basketball team defeated the Washington Huskies at home in Columbus Sunday night, 66-56. The Huskies led after the first quarter of play 15-14, but Ohio State took control after that and despite a Washington surge in the third quarter, controlled the game for the win. Junior forward Cotie McMahon led the way for the Buckeyes with 19 points and freshman Jaloni Cambridge followed with 13 of her own.
The battle of the boards was nearly even with Washington holding a slight 36-34 edge over Ohio State. The two teams were nearly even in field goal percentage as well with Washington shooting 40.4% to Ohio State's 41%. The teams were nearly tied in assists, the Huskies had 11, the Buckeyes 10. The teams were again nearly even with points in the paint, the Buckeyes having a 34-30 edge.
Ohio State overtook Washington in two important areas. The Buckeyes had an advantage of forcing 25 Husky turnovers while only giving up 14 themselves. Ohio State scored 35 of their 66 off of Washington turnovers while Washington scored only 10 off of Ohio State's.
The most significant advantage Ohio State had was with fouls. Washington only committed three more than Ohio State (19-16), but the Buckeyes got to the foul line more often. Ohio State was 14 of 20 at the charity stripe as opposed to Washington being only 4 of 6.
This game was won by the Buckeyes at the foul line and in the turnover battle, and now Ohio State is 20-1, They are third in the conference but have two enormous games this week when they head to the West Coast. On Wednesday they'll take on #1 and undefeated, 20-0 UCLA then on Saturday they'll play #4, 19-2 USC and JuJu Watkins. Ohio State will have a chance to beat two of the best this week as they look to climb even higher than their current #8 ranking!
