The Ohio State football team has the best defensive player in the country on their roster. Caleb Downs has been the best defensive player for each of the last two seasons. He won the Jim Thorpe Award this season in recognition of how well he has played.
Unfortunately, Downs was not able to help the Ohio State Buckeyes beat Miami in the Cotton Bowl. They lost that game 24-14, although seven of those points were given up when Julian Sayin threw a pick-six. Whatever the case, the Buckeyes' season is now over.
With the year now over, several Buckeyes have decided to leave the program from the Transfer Portal. Carnell Tate decided to declare for the NFL Draft. Now, Downs has made a decision on his future, as well. Downs has decided to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft.
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs declares for 2026 NFL Draft
This is not a surprise for the Buckeyes. Downs was always expected to declare for the draft early. He's talented enough to be a top-five pick, and he certainly won't fall out of the top ten. It doesn't make sense for him to return to Ohio State for his senior season.
Of course, the Buckeyes would have welcomed him back with open arms if he had decided to return for one more year. Ohio State has been preparing for this all season long. It's unclear who will take his spot in the starting lineup right now, though Malik Hartford is the favorite right now.
Downs was a massive reason why Ohio State was able to win the 2024 national championship. He is simply one of the best players in the country, regardless of position. Without him, the defense is going to be worse next season. Whichever team drafts him is going to be very happy.
Adding Downs from the Transfer Portal last season was one of the best moves that Ryan Day has made as a head coach.
