They tried to prank Sonny Styles but the former Buckeyes linebacker was too smart to fall for it.
It seems like it happens every year now. Some loser finds the number of a top draft prospect, or, in this case, the draft prospect's father, and tries to execute a prank call because apparently there's nothing more funny than getting a joke over on someone during one of the most important and nerve-racking times in their lives.

As you can see and hear, Styles says that someone tried to prank call him through his father's number, and he had got himself a new number right before the draft. It's almost like he was expecting this to happen. Luckily, it appears like he caught on quickly and was ready for the real call when it came from the Washington Commanders, who selected Styles with the seventh overall pick.
Sonny Styles dealt with a prank-call attempt before being drafted
Styles isn't the first that's been targeted by prank callers, and he won't be the last. Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Cooper Dejean dealt with it in 2024 when someone claiming to be associated with the Green Bay Packers called into his draft party and Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders might've had the most infamous prank call from Jax Ulbrich, who was the son of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. That one was so funny that the Falcons were fined $350,000, and it caused a ton of embarrassment to the elder Ulbrich.
it's a good thing that Styles seemed to recognize the gimmick from the beginning, because otherwise it could have caused unnecessary stress for him. The NFL Draft should be a great event for all the players that get selected, but there's always a bunch of losers that want to take someone else's joy away from them for a quick laugh.Â
With the draft now behind Styles and rookie camp coming in a few days, the linebacker can now focus on his professional career without all the speculation about where he will get selected and by which team. It all seems chaotic enough without someone trying to treat it as a joke.Â
