Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is looking to become the Buckeyes' eighth Heisman Trophy winner. It's a tall order for a receiver to win the Heisman, and just as tall an order for a Buckeye star as Ohio State is always willing to conserve its Heisman candidates in the greater quest of playing for and winning another national championship.

Ryan Day has had six Heisman finalists in his time at Ohio State. He's had Dwayne Haskins Jr., Justin Fields, Chase Young, CJ Stroud twice, and Marvin Harrison Jr. receive invites to New York as finalists, but has yet to have one bring home the hardware. Jeremiah Smith is on pace to be his seventh finalist, but not a winner, at least not at the moment.

Smith was critical again for the Buckeyes in their 24-6 win over Washington. He had eight catches for 81 yards and Ohio State's first touchdown against the Huskies. Through the Buckeyes' first four games, he has 28 catches for 396 yards and five total touchdowns. While that's good, I'm not so sure it's Heisman good.

It is definitely good enough to keep him in the conversation, but he'll need some games with 200+ receiving yards and 3+ touchdowns to get into the front of the race. Ohio State still has plenty of games for him to do that in, and against big-name opponents to capture national attention.

Smith will need to have his best games against teams like Illinois, Penn State, and Michigan. Smith would also likely need Ohio State to make the Big Ten Championship to have a 13th game and that many more plays and stats.

Some Buckeye fans call him JereHeism4n Smith, but every Buckeye on the planet, including Smith, would happily trade a Heisman for a second straight national championship. After all, it's pretty simple for Ohio State.
