The Ohio State football program had a battle for the starting quarterback spot last season. Julian Sayin ended up winning that fight and had a great season. He was a Heisman Finalist in his first year as a starter, and returns heading into next year as the undisputed starting QB.
Tavien St. Clair came into the season as a true freshman with some hopes of earning that starting spot. Of course, it was always going to be borderline impossible for him to win the job. Ryan Day has never had a true freshman be a starting quarterback. The last true freshman to start at quarterback for the Buckeyes was Braxton Miller.
Coming into spring practice, St. Clair had an opening to move up the depth chart to become the backup. After the first day of spring practice, Day let everyone know that's exactly where he sits in the pecking order when it comes to the quarterback depth chart.
Ohio State QB Tavien St. Clair is now second-string on the depth chart
Steve Helwagen of Bucknuts let everyone know that St. Clair is entering the spring as the backup on the depth chart. Of course, St. Clair will have to perform well enough to keep that spot. That's especially true after the Ohio State Buckeyes added a quarterback in the Transfer Portal.
Ohio State added Justyn Martin in the offseason. He is battling with St. Clair for that backup spot. St. Clair, a former five-star recruit, needs to be in that backup spot when Fall camp arrives to have any shot of winning the starting job next season. Sayin will likely head to the NFL after this year.
Sayin is going to be the starter all season long, so that's not in question. What is in question is St. Clair's future if he isn't able to earn second-string honors out of spring practice. He is immensely talented and really wants to see the field for his home-state school.
