Ohio State is in the middle of Fall camp, just a couple of weeks ahead of a Week 1 matchup against Ball State. As practices continue to happen, multiple freshmen have shed their black stripes in the last couple of weeks. That includes cornerback Jay Timmons, who might be pushing for a starting spot.
The offense is still trying to figure out the best combination of starters. Julian Sayin is the undisputed starter at the quarterback spot. Tavien St. Clair is supposed to be the backup heading into the season after a strong Spring Game. Now, that might not be the case.
Luke Fahey is pushing Tavien St. Clair for the backup quarterback spot
According to Ryan Day, Fahey didn't just shed his black stripe, but he is also pushing the former five-star recruit for the backup QB spot. Fahey is a three-star recruit from the state of California. St. Clair had a great performance in the spring, but Day claimed that Fahey is pushing him for that second-string spot.
For Fahey to lose his black stripe before the season is impressive. As a true freshman quarterback, he isn't getting many reps, so he has had to maximize the ones he has gotten. Day wasn't initially expecting Fahey to actually be a big part of the rotser this year.
Of course, this could be Day trying to light a fire under St. Clair to be a little more consistent in practice. It's highly unlikely that Fahey would actually be the guy who would step in if Sayin ended up getting hurt. St. Clair would still almost certainly be the guy who steps in.
Even so, it might be a good thing that the Buckeyes have more depth at the quarterback spot than originally expected. Day has always coached quarterbacks well. It's part of what has made him such a good head coach.
Ohio State could have the best offense in the country
Heading into the 2026 season, the Buckeyes could end up having the best offense in the country. With Sayin in his second year as a starter and Jeremiah Smith still on the roster, the Buckeyes should be the most dangerous offense in the nation. That will start in Week 1 against Ball State.
Figuring out the proper offensive line combination will go a long way toward figuring out if the team will have the top offense in the country. Four out of the five offensive line starters have returned from last year, and they are still running multiple combinations of starters out there for first-team reps.
Austin Siereveld will be starting up front somewhere, but whether that's at left tackle or right guard has yet to be determined. Siereveld got hurt and missed a few practices, which has slowed down the process of figuring that out. Day originally wanted to name the starting offensive line this week.
However, the Buckeyes will have to wait to figure out that final combination. As for the quarterback situation, let's just hope Sayin doesn't get hurt so we don't have to learn who the true backup is.
