Back in the 2014 season, the Ohio State football program faced a crisis before the season even began. Braxton Miller got hurt in practice before the season. He was a Heisman Trophy candidate to that point. That meant J.T. Barrett had to come in and be the starter as a freshman.
Barrett played great until the final game of the year, when he broke his leg in the second half against TTUN. That put Cardale Jones in the spotlight, and he delivered. He went on a legendary three-game run, leading the Buckeyes to a national championship. Now, he's trying his hand at coaching.
Former Ohio State QB Cardale Jones earns new high school coaching gig
The Staples football program in Connecticut announced that Jones has been added to the coaching staff. They have won five state championships in their history, with their most recent one coming in 2023. Jones will now join their staff to help them in their journey.
Jones is a busy man, as this is not his only job. He also works as an analyst for CBS Sports, and he will be doing work for them this Fall. In addition to that, he has a podcast that he records locally in Ohio with former Ohio State running back Beanie Wells and sports director Dave Holmes.
This will be a new endeavor for Jones, as he doesn't have any previous coaching experience. However, as a quarterback, he has a lot of knowledge about offenses. He should be able to help some high school students learn how to process the offense better.
Jones is the QB Coach for the Wreckers, so he will be in charge of teaching the quarterbacks how to process information. Jones was able to execute an Ohio State offense to the highest level, so that will be invaluable experience for those high school kids to have.
Ohio State could have won back-to-back titles with Cardale Jones
After winning the title in 2014, Jones returned to Ohio State the following year. He could have been a second-round pick if he had left, but he wanted to return to school to get his degree. Unfortunately, Urban Meyer didn't handle that situation very well. Ohio State had three starting quarterbacks on the team.
Miller ended up moving to wide receiver for 2015, and Meyer played musical chairs with the quarterback. Jones started the year as the starter before Barrett eventually fully took over. Had Meyer just decided on a starter from the beginning of the season, the team could have won back-to-back national titles.
Instead, the Buckeyes lost to Michigan State in the second-to-last game of the year, which ended their College Football Playoff hopes. They ended up having to settle for a Fiesta Bowl berth, in which they crushed Notre Dame. 2015 is the last time the Buckeyes were ranked first in both the AP and the Coaches Polls.
This season, the Buckeyes also hold that distinction. They are hoping to finish the season a little better than that team, though.
