Ohio State got its season off on the right skate over the weekend. The 16th-ranked Buckeyes hosted the Northern Michigan Wildcats. On Friday, the first goal of the new season was scored by an old familiar face for the Buckeyes. Junior Max Montes, who had 14 goals last year, gave the Bucks a 1-0 lead in the first period.
A newcomer then struck for Ohio State, and he struck twice. Felix Caron would get his first goal on the power play. His second goal would give Ohio State a 3-0 lead at the first break. The second stanza belonged to Northern Michigan as they would answer with two straight goals of their own, making it 3-2 before Ohio State would answer.
Another Buckeye veteran, senior Davis Burnside, who also had 14 goals last season, would get his first of this season. Burnside's goal would make it 4-2, Ohio State, heading into the final period. It would be a stalemate until Riley Thompson, who had 17 goals last season, scored a late goal to make the final score 5-2.
Game two on Saturday would also begin with a hot Buckeye start in the first period. Sophomore forward Nathan Lewis would score first. His third career goal would give Ohio State the 1-0 lead. Senior forward, alternate captain, and transfer from Minnesota State, Adam Eisele, would score and the Buckeyes would lead 2-0 at the first break.
Again, most of the second period would belong to Northern Michigan, they would get one goal back,; and Ohio State would lead 2-1 heading into the third. It would again be a tight contest until late in the game when Felix Caron would get his third goal of the season on an empty net that gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 win.
Ohio State goalie Kristoffer Eberly would weather a combined 36 shots over the weekend, with only three of them scoring. Ohio State got its season off to a 2-0 start. They'll hit the road this weekend to face #12 UConn and have a ranked series in games three and four of this very young season.
